Welcome!
DNA Surname testing is the newest tool available to genealogists. These tests help genealogists verify their paternal ancestry (father's father) in a quick and easy way. It saves time, prevents mistakes, and provides invaluable data that can be obtained in no other way. The Richmond DNA Project was established with the purpose of having a centralized internet resource for the RICHMOND Surname and DNA Genealogy Research. This project will also give us a better understanding of all the various RICHMOND lineages in the world.
Goals of the Richmond DNA Project are to assist genealogical research and to provide general insight concerning our Family's overall history and genetic composition. DNA testing is not a substitute for genealogy research. Instead, it is a companion tool to prove or disprove research, determine relationships, and to provide clues for further research. DNA testing can be an extremely powerful tool when combined with your genealogy research. DNA testing can uncover information that was not previously known, as well as to confirm your research, and get leads for further research.

It is free and you can get it here. The site can still be viewed with other browsers, but there are some issues that I haven't worked out yet.
What's New:
- 15 November 2009 - The results chart has been updated and I will be updating the "Lab Results - Analysis" Page in the coming days. If you have not yet submitted your pedigree, please do so. Comparing pedigrees is one of the most important things we do here. Thanks - Jeff
- 9 November 2009 - With the addition of Kit #24625, we now have four matched groups in our project! This addition would be the two participants now in the "WEBB" group.
- 9 November 2009 - ATTENTION POTENTIAL "WEBB" PARTICIPANTS: At this time, the Richmond DNA Project will only accept those with the WEBB surname if their Y-DNA Results belong to the I1 Haplogroup. This is due to the I1 Haplogroup being proven to be the Haplogroup for those who share the RICHMOND-WEBB connection. (You can read further info here. re: Generation 13) Please don't misunderstand, WEBB participants are very welcome. If you join through the automated "Join" button at FTDNA, I can let you know if your Haplogroup qualifies.
- 9 November 2009 - Kit #24625 has joined the project. This kit was previously tested by Family Tree DNA and is now joining the project.
- 30 October 2009 - Kit# 162943 Y-DNA1-37 Marker results have been received from the Lab.
- 12 September 2009 - New Project Member! Kit# 162943 has been ordered.
- 17 July 2009 - Kit# 139731 Y-DNA26-37 Marker results have been received from the Lab. These results match up with Group R-03 and Group R-05 will now merge with that group. Groups R-06, R-07, and R-08 will be relabeled R-05, R-06, and R-07 respectively.
- 22 June 2009 - Kit# 88152 Deep Clade-I results received from the lab. Confirmed Haplogroup I1.
- 19 June 2009 - Kit# 139731 Y-DNA13-25 Marker results have been received from the Lab.
- 26 April 2009 - The History Section has been updated. There is a way for participants to post their family trees on the site using TNG Software. This section is protected by password and currently only accessible by project members. I CAN NOT offer any assistance or support for the family tree section. Please read the instructions that are posted there. I just don't have the time to focus on this right now. I will post some helpful links so you can learn it if you are interested. My tree is partially posted there. - Jeff
- 26 April 2009 - The Group number designations have been reorganized. They are sorted first by matched groups, and then by haplo in alphabetical order. See the Analysis Page for more info.
- 26 April 2009 - With the addition of Kit #145693, we now have three matched groups in our project!
- 26 April 2009 - Kit #145693 has joined the project. This kit matches up with Kit #96360. Perhaps these two researchers will be able to compare notes and extend their paper trails!
- 25 April 2009 - Kit #N71654 has joined the project. This kit was previously tested by Family Tree DNA and is now joining the project.
- 25 April 2009 - Kit #40603 has joined the project. This kit was previously tested by Family Tree DNA and is now joining the project.
- 24 April 2009 - Kit #93134 and Kit #120633 have joined the project. These kits were previously tested by Family Tree DNA and are now joining the project. Kit #93134 has an adoption surname of PERRY and joins Group R-02. Kit #120633 has his closest match to the R1b1b2 groups. However, the paper trail has not yet connected and with only 12 markers to compare, there is a genetic distance of 3, 4, and 4 respectively.
- 29 December 2008 - Based on the results of Kit #139731, a new Group has been added. The haplogroup for this group is R1b1b2, the same as two other Groups. Comparing only twelve markers, these three groups are very close. Perhaps, if the paper trails could be extended, we could combine two or all of these groups into a single patriarch.
- 29 December 2008 - Kit #139731 Marker Results 1-12 received from the Lab
- 7 December 2008 - On May 5, 2008, Family Tree DNA (our lab) updated it's Y chromosome haplogroup tree nomenclature. The Richmond DNA Project Website has now been updated to reflect that change.
- 1 December 2008 - Kit# 139731 has been received by the Lab.
- 19 November 2008 - A new participant, Kit# 139731 has been ordered!
- 19 November 2008 - I would like to apologize for the lack of updates. I recently started a new job and haven't found the time to attend to the project. I have some ideas, but right now, not the time. I hope to pick it up over the upcoming winter season. Until then, I wish you all a joyous time with your families during the upcoming holidays. - Jeff
- 2 April 2008 - Our first WEBB participant has joined the project! Although the paper trail does not go back far enough yet, it is assumed from the closeness of the markers, that he is descended from the WEBB-RICHMOND connection of 1430. For more info see the Richmond Family Ancestry web site (Generation 12)
- 14 March 2008 - Kit #109585 Marker Results 1-12 received from the Lab
- 18 February 2008 - Kit# 109585 has been received by the Lab.
- 14 February 2008 - DESCENDANTS of Caleb Hazard RICHMOND or his father Nathaniel - Click Here for more info.
- 14 February 2008 - Richmond DNA Project UPDATE - Early milestone in our young project - Click Here for more.
- 6 February 2008 - We now have results back from 4 participants in the John Richmond of Taunton Line! We now have a good foundation for identifying the markers of our Patriarch in that line. Please check the Analysis Page for details.

WANTED! - DNA Testee
FREE DNA test being offered for a descendant of CALEB HAZARD RICHMOND, born 1 January 1805, Newport, RI, married Mary Randolph DODSON, AND/OR Caleb's father, NATHANIEL RICHMOND, born December 1768, Newport, RI, married Mary HAZARD.
This offer is being sponsored by a current participant of the Richmond DNA Project. This is a great opportunity. If you are a male being descended from one of the above men, and are considering having your DNA tested, please contact the Project Administrator. You will need a letter and tree showing the male lineage to either man.
Around the Website
We have links to articles on DNA as well as General Genealogy. The "DNA Project section" is where to find details regarding the DNA Project. Using TNG software, the "Family History Section" of the website is a separate database altogether. Family Trees and other documents here will help support the project research. The "RICHMOND Family Forums" are for discussing anything RICHMOND. Discuss your hard-to-find ancestors and such.
Richmond DNA Project Gets Going!
DNA Surname Projects:
"...they started at a crawl, steadily gathered momentum, and are about to reach that stage where they spread like wildfire". (from the book Trace Your Roots with DNA, by Smolenyak and Turner)
May 31, 2007 -This surname project is really just getting underway. We have recently begun to promote our site, and perhaps you are reading this because of something you read on a genealogy site or a newsgroup. Our hope is to recruit participants from across the U.S. and around the globe. We begin our project with five participants from last year. These initial five were tested through our lab, Family Tree DNA. The project had been waiting for a family member to run it.
Become a Participant
A 'Participant' is a male, with the surname RICHMOND or one of it's variants, who returns his kit to the lab for DNA analysis. DNA surname testing is based on the male Y-chromosome, a female, or anyone that is interested in the RICHMOND DNA Project, can still take part in this project by sponsoring a RICHMOND male and having them return their kit to the lab. The participants and sponsors have access to pedigrees and contact information of participants. If you sign-up using the link below, the lab will give you our group rate. For what participants can expect, click here for step-by-step.
"As we gain more knowledge about genetics and as more genetic "maps" are created, and also as more powerful computers and online databases become available, I predict that genetic profiling will become commonplace. If all of our relatives, including very distant cousins, have DNA samples made and recorded, future computers and databases will be able to map our relationships in detail. By matching the millions of bits of information together, we should be able to someday establish a person's ancestry with great precision. Someday we will accept genetic maps in lieu of pedigree charts. To be sure, this will not happen in 2001. However, I suspect that genetic mapping will become commonplace within the lifetimes of many people reading these words". - (Dick Eastman Online, 3 Jan 2001)
